Nikon Coolpix L100 Camera Review
August 12, 2009
Looking for an economical digital camera with an exceptional optical zoom and user friendly profile, Nikon Coolpix L100, is the answer to all your needs. Though it has certain short comings, Nikon Coolpix L100 is well suited for people who like to capture everything in “Automatic” mode.
Mega Zoom Lens
The Mega zoom lens unusual for a camera this size, (not small enough to fit in your pocket though) the L100 has a NIKKOR lens of 15x optical zoom that has a wide angle of 28-420mm focal length on a 35mm camera. One thing commendable about the lens is that in the Macromode, it is capable of focusing finer details up to 1cm close.
Shooting Speed
Being a mega zoom camera, one wouldn’t and shouldn’t expect a speedy operation-however, Nikon Coolpix L100 fares well in this area to our surprise. In good lighting conditions, shutter lag time is 0.7 seconds that increases up to just 1 second in case of low light. In sequence shooting, 2.1 seconds is the mean time which increases to 2.3 seconds in case the flash is turned on.
Nikon L100 compromises of two burst modes; one is the High speed mode that shoots at a rate of 13fps up to 30 frames and the second one is the Full resolution continuous shooting mode which allows up to 7 photos to be shot in one go but at a frustratingly slow rate of 0.4fps. Good news for sports fans is the feature Sports Continuous Mode that allows 13 frames per second. So, now you can capture each and every shot, move and cheer.
Recording Modes
Apart from the above mentioned features, Nikon Coolpix L100 has a host of other modes just for your convenience. Scene Auto Selector is one such mode. Just select this option and all the technical aspects such as ISO sensitivity, White balance, zoom, etc. are adjusted according to the scene to be selected. In case, you are capturing human subjects, don’t forget to turn on the Smile Mode and Blink Detection so that the desired person is smiling at his/her best with eyes wide open! The in camera Red Eye Fix that eliminates the annoying red eye effect and the 15 scene modes available in the camera are one of the several features making photography easy for you. The active zoom, D-Lighting and Motion Detection also help out a user in improving the image.
Anti Blur Feature
Capturing a fast moving object or shooting in low light, both lead to a blur and shaken picture. There are 4 Anti Blur features available including the Image Sensor Shift VR image stabilization. In case, you are shooting a football player, it’s highly important to keep your object in focus. The Motion Detection Option detects the moving object and camera shake and thereby automatically shifts to a higher ISO setting (e.g. 3200) and a faster shutter speed.
Short Comings In The Deal
The point and shooting cameras usually indicate the user when the flash is to be used. But in Nikon Coolpix L100, until the flash is raised (and that too manually), there is no indication. There is no view finder, just the LCD to preview your shots.
A much bigger problem is that it cannot be recharged with AA batteries. It requires the alkaline or lithium cells for its functioning.
Nikon Coolpix L100 is a compact user friendly camera with a large hand grip and easy to use buttons and controls. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor photography, Nikon Coolpix L100 is a gem.

Nikon Coolpix S52 Camera Review
July 19, 2009
Judging a camera is just like analyzing a person; the outside matters as much as the inside. A little discrepancy in the outer look of the camera or the quality of the image will not only let down the buyer but also gives a bad impression about the manufacturer. However, maintaining the excellent past record, Nikon once again has proved its mettle in the field of photography by offering its latest venture; the Nikon Coolpix S52.
Supporting a Nikkor lens (38- 114mm) which provides a 3x optical zoom and a 9.0 mega pixel resolution to ensure remarkable large size prints of up to 16x 20 inches maximum; this is an incredible point and shoot digital camera. The 9.0 effective mega pixels make sure that your snap covers the minute details without disturbing the image accuracy. Moreover, the image integrity remains unaltered even if you crop and enlarge it.
LCD screens may be present in every camera but it’s rare to encounter a 3.0 inch High Resolution LCD Screen that has an anti-reflection and high-contrast coating so that you can immediately share photos and movies after capturing no matter you are in bright sun light or in a dark room; say thanks to the screen that has a 170° wide- angle view. Well watching the snaps on the LCD does not sound like too much fun! So, here again Nikon gives you the freedom to enjoy the pictures as slide shows on a flat screen TV due to the VGA quality support S52 offers. And this is only a part of the offer; the new Pictmotion option lets you even assign music pieces to your slide shows both for pictures and movies. There are five music pieces already installed in the camera whereas you can install up to 10 pieces of your own choice and can also add effects to your snaps by using various visual styles available.
One of the major problems faced by photographers is the blurring of the image by sudden camera shake especially when shooting a fast moving object or when the light is low and you have to slow down the shutter speed, since in these situations keeping the camera still is a real challenge. But S52 caters this problem very smartly by offering the Optical Vibration Reduction Image Stabilization that gives clear and sharp results with a fast framing speed.
Not only this, but a host of other features collectively called as the Nikon Image Innovations is incorporated in the camera only for your ease and delight including the Face-priority AF that is workable outside the scene modes and is able of focusing around five faces in a group photo, the Red Eye Fix and the D-Lighting option which will eliminate red eye effects and will enhance the dark areas of an image respectively. In case of improper illumination you don’t have to activate these options every time you plan to take a snap, the One- Touch portrait Button present at the top makes it easier for you so that you can capture the moment with just a click.
The camera also provides a High ISO sensitivity of up to 3200 which comes into action automatically whenever there is deficiency of light. It is made possible by the New Expeed Image Processor that ensures high quality image production in no time.
The camera records movies of TV- quality with an amazing sound feature. The length of the movie depends upon the space provided by your SD/ SDHC memory card. The camera makes sure that your movies and pictures capture the right object and therefore, it makes use of the Face Detection features.
Coming back to its exterior pattern, the Coolpix series by Nikon comprises of the wave-surface design that gives it a neat look. The slim, smart and stylish apparel with an all metal body and two really unique colors; Crimson red and Midnight Black makes this camera stand out high amongst the rest. Being small in size, it can easily slip into your pocket or purse and can be carried along every where so any time you feel like capturing the moment, its all a click away!
Nikon Coolpix S630 Review – Compact Digital Camera – Deals, specs, features
June 3, 2009
Nikon Coolpix S630 is the camera with a high definition resolution and a portable size to carry around easily. So what is new? Well! You may think that it’s the same as other cameras available in the market but it’s not. Offering an exception 7X optical zoom though the zoom control may seem to be a little rough, and an apt ISO range, this digital camera has something new about it. Though the 7X zoom lens may make the camera a bit bulky than its competitors, nevertheless it is able to fit in small pockets of shirt or bags so you don’t have to miss the fun anywhere.
The camera provides ISO sensitivity at full resolution of 12 as Auto and Fixed range auto (ISO 64-200 & 64-400), 64; 100; 200; 400; 800 & 1600, however one will agree that the best quality photos are obtained up to ISO 400. It has a 12 mega pixel CCD that offers image stabilization due to its sensors. Equipped with a 2.7 inch 230k LCD screen, it allows the user to view the videos after shooting.
One good thing about this appliance is the simplicity of its menu and function keys. The shutter button at the top is surrounded by the zoom ring and below that there are the Mode and Play buttons. Instructions are simple and easy to understand so even a naive soul like me can operate it! There is a scroll wheel/directional pad and buttons for menu settings and deleting photos, operable while shooting or after the video or photos have been captured.
The smart functions that the camera offers are something that makes it a must buy. While Motion Detection is no new feature that tracks a moving object and adjusts the shutter speed, the camera wouldn’t have been fully efficient if Optical VR Image Stabilization option wasn’t included. No matter how good the camera follows a fast moving object, camera shakes ruin the overall beauty of the image so the Image stabilizer compensates the effect. This also helps in capturing a sharper and cleaner video or photo in unbalanced lighting conditions.
The Portrait System in Nikon eliminates the Red-Eye effect most of the time automatically. Improved and highly efficient Face-Priority Auto Focus option can recognize upto 12 faces in a frame and focuses them by itself without you having to choose the function and to ensure that you get only the happy poses, the Smile Mode releases the shutter by mechanically detecting the smile on your loved one’s face. And to prevent mishaps during photo sessions, the new Blink Proof function takes two photos at a time, and records the one in which the eyes of your subject are opened. And you don’t have to fuss over proper light and brightness required since the D- Light function is there to adjust the image details weather you are shooting in pitch darkness or in a brightly lit room; the resulting photos and videos appear next to real.
The unconventional curved shape of Nikon Coolpix S630 provides a firm grip for the thumb and proves to be the most comfortable-to-hold compact cameras ever offered. Talking about the physical aspects, the unique half-plastic and half-metal built of the camera cannot be ignored. It is available in many cool colors; black, blue, purple, silver and red, however only red and black are available in UK.
Features like White balance; auto, daylight, incandescent, fluorescent, cloudy, flash, manual, etc. help you create images close to natural supported by various intelligent recording modes such as Auto, scene, scene auto, sport, continuous, high sensitivity, smile and movie to make them more special. And they can be made more dramatic and classic by using the Scene Auto Selector tells the camera to choose a particular setting required in that kind of situation for eg, in case of a sunny beach or a closed room where light is medium. New Sports Continues Scene Mode can shoot up to 11fps, maximum 20 frames, when the resolution is equal or lower than 3 mega pixel thus allowing you to capture unpredictable basket ball shots as well as quick shots in golf or base ball.
The Coolpix is really cool since it ensures high picture quality with the help of New Expeed Image Processor ensures high quality pictures and has an ultra sophisticated digital imaging system that makes it a smart camera for people of all ages. The price range is also feasible… something to brag about! Think of the oohs and aahs you will be listening to when you show off your trendy camera around in your friends so don’t miss the chance!
