Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS Camera Review

September 27, 2009

Canon PowerShot SD 1200 IS is an amazing digital ELPH camera offering you ease of use, style and affordability. Those who have just taken up photography as a hobby or are learning the tricks, Canon PowerShot SD 1200 IS is the perfect camera to start with. Attractive and compact in built, it is one of the finest models from Canon so far.

Physical Features

Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS, being only 3.48 x 2.16 x 0.86 inches in dimensions is actually smaller than a deck of cards and is so tiny that can easily fit in your pocket. It weighs 4.23 ounces that makes it ideal to carry around on your trips and outdoor activities. Available in funky colours; pink, orange, green, blue, light and dark gray, the camera appeals to girls and boys equally. The camera has a pleasant and unique design that suits both casual and formal use.

Display and Viewfinder

SD1200 IS has a large 2.5 inch screen which could have been bigger if the space on top and back of the camera wasn’t wasted on the next-to-useless linked optical viewfinder. The linked optical viewfinder has lost its significance with the passage of time since now photographers prefer the more helpful LCD screen for framing of the shots.

The TFT active matrix, 230000 pixels display screen offers a 16:9 widescreen viewing angle and for the adventurous types who are prone to hit and scratch their screens often, the display comes with a PureColor LCD II protective coating. Though dust and finger prints are still a part and parcel of your outdoor shootings, the screen is highly easy to clean and gives a clear and sharp image playback. The Zoom toggle given can be used to zoom in on the photos during the play back and the display shows the zoomed areas as crisp and clear as a computer screen would.

Optical Zoom and Lens

Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS offers an excellent focus with 3x optical zoom, 4x digital zoom and 12x combined zoom that extends your focal length from 35 to 105mm. Supporting a 10.0 megapixel 11.8 inch Zoom lens and a CCD sensor, the camera allows you to shoot casual as well as focused shots with ease while maintaining the quality of the picture.

DIGIC 4 Processor

SD1200 IS possesses a DIGIC 4 Processor that is the reason behind excellent lighting in the still images captured by the camera. The processor recognizes faces in the frame and adjusts the focus and lighting according to the positions assigned to the faces. In high light conditions, the results are fine but in low light situations, the sensor showed difficulty in picking up the faces. Though, one might not consider the image quality as highly exceptional, the performance is still better than most of the cameras have to offer.

Light Sensitivity

SD1200 IS offers a wide range of ISO Settings; ISO 80, ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400, ISO 800, ISO 1600 and ISO 3200 which along with the brilliant i-Contrast feature takes care of the light issue. In low light conditions, image noise is a problem especially, above ISO 200, photo quality takes a down side. However, the Intelligent Contrast Correction system (i-Contrast) takes up charge and gives a better picture by illuminating the dark areas in the image without over blowing already lit up areas. The i-Contrast can be applied while capturing the photo or when viewing the shots in the play back mode.

Shooting Modes

For those who are new in the field of photography, SD1200 IS offers a good margin for learning. It has 18 preset shooting modes for different kinds of shooting situations. If you want to capture sea-life through a glass, then apply the Aquarium setting, which produces photos of underwater life without the reflection of the glass. And if you want to take a dip in the water yourself, then feel free to do so as the Underwater mode allow you to take snaps with minimum back scatter and off course in a water proof casing. Other modes include the P or Program mode designed for experienced photographers in which you can set the ISO speed, white balance, and metering according to the situation and the Kids & Pets for prompt focusing and fast image capturing.

Movie Recording

With SD1200, you can record VGA movies at 640 x 480 and QVGA at 320 x 240 resolutions which can be thereafter replayed on a computer or you can simply connect the camera to a television for playback. The camera can record a video of one hour maximum or a clip of 4GB size so this gives you the freedom to shoot continuous videos without worrying about the memory space.

Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Review

September 6, 2009

Compact, stylish and equipped with image stabilization, Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is an amazing point-and shoot digital camera that despite its small size is capable of delivering great results. For both club goers and campers; Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is an ideal choice owing to the ease of use and handling that it offers. With a host of brilliant features and functions incorporated, the camera is fit for use in the most demanding of situations.

Camera Size

Having the honour of being the smallest Canon ELPH camera to date, SD780 IS is a novel addition to the compact point-and-shoot cameras designed for outdoor shootings. It is astonishingly slim with a thickness of only 0.7 inches which gives it an advantage to get fit into your shirt or jeans pocket or in your bag pack. So all you have to do is grab your SD780 IS and hit the road!

Built and Style

Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is unique in appearance, sleek and simple in style and strong and robust in built. Instead of using plastics in its built, the camera is made up of alloy materials that give it a solid look. No doubt, the camera is attractive in looks and is available in four elegant colours; silver, golden, red and black. However, the main highlight is its smooth finish which in my opinion is a downside for pocket cams. Since it is most carried around in pockets and bags, there are chances of getting the finish scratched and marked by coins and other stuff. So, it’s advisable to carry it in a small, form-fitting case or skin to keep it unscathed.

Image Stabilisation

Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is a smart12.1 megapixel ELPH camera with a 1/2.3″ CCD sensor. Supported by the DIGIC IV Processor, it is capable of handling various shooting situations with efficiency and produces images that are next to real especially when shooting in sunlight. With a number of movie and shooting options along with image stabilization, both stills and videos captured are simply wonderful.

Lens and Zoom

SD 780 IS proudly holds out a 3x (33-100mm) zoom lens, with an aperture size of f/3.2-5.8. Now most of you would argue that it’s not something extraordinary especially those who want to take telephoto shots indoors. But when one looks at the physical size of the lens and camera when it is fully extended, one would be ready to compromise on the aperture size. In ready-to-shoot mode, the lens only sticks out about three-quarters of an inch from the face of the camera while maintaining the compactness of the camera body.
The moderate-wide to moderate-tele zoom lens has a two segmented solid alloy barrel providing the lens the needed protection for rough and tough use.

Display and Viewfinder

Looking at the over all petite frame of the camera, one should not be surprised to find a 2.5” 230K-pixel PureColor II LCD screen instead of a 3” display usually seen in point-and-shoot cameras nowadays. It offers magnificent viewing angles and fine picture quality and colour accuracy is better than produced by most of the other models of the league.

Coming to the physical aspect; the screen has a newly developed finger print repellant coating which wasn’t available in the previous models. Though the screen is easy to get scratched, on the other hand, it’s easier to clean as well and in some cases, minor marks can be removed with a little effort. However, if you are obsessive about a smooth display then go for a screen protector to keep it safe.

SD780 IS has a small optical viewfinder as well which gives satisfactory performance. Being tiny in size, makes it difficult for those who wear glasses to view images through it but its quiet useful when you are shooting in scorching sunlight or taking action shots.

Image Stabilization

The SD780 offers Canon’s latest lens-integrated stabilization system, which via a shifting lens element compensates for unnecessary camera shakes and produces clear and crisp shots. The IS system uses four basic modes; Continuous, Shoot Only, Panning, and Off for different shooting situations and adjusts camera motion accordingly. For e.g. when shooting sports, the Panning mode will prevent the IS system from hindering the compulsory subject-following motion of the camera to take the shot. This system is also helpful in producing nice shots in case of low lighting conditions with 1/15 and 1/10 shutter-speed.

Video Recording

SD780 IS following the foot steps of various other models is capable of producing High Definition 720p movies at the rate of 30 fps and a maximum resolution of 1280×720 pixels. Besides HD video recording, the SD780 also offers the HDMI output to an HDTV so you can enjoy them with others. The Audio quality is less than impressive, just like any other still camera sound. The sound is also affected by the fact that the microphone situated beneath the lens is frequently and unintentionally covered by the user’s hand thereby, depressing the audio quality.

Shutter Speed

In the shutter lag mode, the camera takes just 0.02 seconds to capture the shot that is similar to the shutter lag time offered by the Sony Cyber shot DSC-T700 and less than the Nikon CoolPix S560.
In the Continuous shooting mode, the shutter speed is 0.8 fps and the fact that it can keep on shooting with the same sped until the memory card is all consumed, is simply commendable for a camera this size. In this area, it too very well competes with the top most models of the era including the Cyber Shot and Casio Exilim.

Other features

Features like Face Detection, Blink Detection and Self- timer may not be new to this camera but are no doubt very much needed. The DIGIC IV Processor tracks and prioritizes faces in a frame and gives them nice exposure whereas Blink Detection would take care of shots when the subject is blinking. Face detection self-timer will make the camera shoot again when it detects an additional face in the frame. So after taking a snap of your friends, you can join the group too.

Battery

Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is powered by an awfully thin and lightweight 760 mAh lithium-ion pack. The small sized battery gives a small output limit too; only 200 shots per charge so when on a trip, take extra batteries with you to avoid any disappointments.

Final Word

With a thin 0.7 inch body, Image stabilization, 2.5 inch LCD and a view finder and not to mention the 720p HD movie recording, Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is a smart combination of style and efficiency. Though, there are certain downsides to the deal like screen and body easy to get scratched or noisy shots; SD780 IS is an affordable point-and-shoot camera with ultra-reliable photographic performance and strong built.

Canon PowerShot A2100 IS Review

August 6, 2009

Another exciting offer from the house of Canon; Canon PowerShot A2100 IS is a superb combination of cool features at a reasonable price. Canon PowerShot A2100 IS looks exactly like it’s former family member the PowerShot A200 IS but with a better built and quality.

Built and Design

The Canon PowerShot A2100 IS adorns a beautiful matt-black plastic body that is slimmer than the A200 model and easier to hold and carry around as when turned off, its only 3cms thick. This digital camera weighs only 185g thus making it a nice companion for your outdoor activities.

Another remarkable up gradation in its built is the centrally positioned metal mount given for the tripod stand in contrast to the previous models which used to have a plastic mount located on the extreme bottom left of the camera.

However, one thing will disappoint the users a little; lack of a rubberized grip that was a comfy component found in Canon models. Instead, a smooth and flat surface with the ‘Canon” logo imprinted on it welcomes your grip. This makes it highly difficult to hold the camera properly. Nonetheless, the situation is still bearable, thanks to the raised mouldings on the rear end of the camera.

Controls and Buttons

Being a simple camera, the PowerShot A2100 IS has few external controls; 11 to be exact. For beginners, this camera is splendid since it offers easy shooting with Easy and new Smart Auto modes but for those, who are well into the business, the camera may seem to be a little humble.

On the top of the A2100 IS, the Power button, Mode Dial, Zoom Lever and Shutter button are located whereas the bottom side bears the tripod mount and battery compartment and a slot for the SD Memory Card. Through the large 3 inch LCD screen, you can directly approach the focus and the flash function by just clicking the left and right on the navigational pad. Clicking upwards and downwards would set the exposure and timer features respectively.

Though there is no individual button for ISO Speed setting, the Function/Set button in the center of the navigational pad takes you to a sub menu which permits you to not only set the ISO Speed but also the white balance, colours, metering, continuous shooting and image size/quality settings.

All the buttons and control are easy to operate and extremely user compliant. The Mode dial action is rigid in this model in order to prevent any unintentional changes in the mode when kept in a pocket or a bag.

Image Quality

A 12.1 megapixel point and shoot camera with 6x optical zoom, a DIGIC 4 Processor, and an Anti Shake system- IS Mode; that’s all you need to know about the image production and quality which, if you haven’t got the hint is astounding. The blur effect is taken care of in case you are shooting at a lower shutter speed or in unstable position.

A wide ISO setting (80-800) enables the user to get rid of the Noise problem. ISO 80 and 100 gives Noise free images, at 200 it starts appearing and at 400 it is quiet noticeable 800 and 1600 are out of question!

The Auto Face Detection, Auto Face Recognition and Red Eye Effect are some of the features that make image production easier and enjoyable. Chromatic aberrations are seen but they are limited to the purple fringing effect that is observed in high contrast regions only. At night time, shutter speed increases to 15 sec that allows the user to capture maximum light. In the Macro mode, you can focus something to as close as 1cm though the image is soft and requires more sharpening which can be done by Adobe Photoshop.

Price

For UK customers, price lies between £199 and £249 which is fair since the whole market is struggling to survive the credit crunch.

Verdict

Perfect for amateurs and those who are looking for a simple point and shoot digital camera, Canon PowerShot A2100 IS is easy to handle and operate. However, one should not be expecting something exceptionally new in it. The camera has average image production in low light conditions and is not highly sophisticated but taking in account, the feasibility and compliance it offers to the user, it is highly recommended for family use.

Canon PowerShot G9 Digital Camera Review – 6X optical zoom

June 5, 2009

Canon PowerShot G9 has three major functions that distinguishes it from its former counterpart i.e., The Raw mode, the LCD screen and its sensor. The Raw image recording when supported by RAW and JPEG recording allows the user to have better image processing.

Around 3 years back, Canon launched its amazing Canon PowerShot G7 that created havoc in the market. In 2007, Canon astonished its customers with another similar camera; the Power Shot G9 that was found to be more advanced and efficient in performance.

Canon PowerShot G9 has three major functions that distinguishes it from its former counterpart i.e., The Raw mode, the LCD screen and its sensor. The Raw image recording when supported by RAW and JPEG recording allows the user to have better image processing. Raw Image Task available in the zoom Browser software takes care of minor effects in the image such as setting of white balance, color tone and temperature and exposure of light in various areas of the scene. Moreover, the Raw images can be converted to JPEG or TIFF file as you may like it. As for the LCD screen you can’t ask for more! The camera has a magnificent pure color 3 inch LCD II screen providing high resolution in photos and clips. And the larger than before 1/1.7 inch sensor offering 12.1 mega pixel resolution and an exceptionally broader viewing angle will enable you to take beautiful shots and then crop the image according to your convenience. Not only this, they can be printed up to a maximum of A2 size print. The photo shooting is made easy and fast by the DIGIC III processor and ISAPS function ensures better picture integrity and noise reduction. Further improving the results, Auto ISO shift and ISO 1600 is present that gives a new life to your photos.

Canon G9 has around 25 shooting modes and two white balance custom settings and has full manual control thus giving you the power to shoot according to your will. The new Face detection option will make the camera automatically recognize a human face and focus it to produce a snap with perfect settings. And those red eye effects are now history since the Red Eye Correction function can be used in the playback. Other common problems observed while taking snaps or recording movies are the annoying blurring or shaking of the camera. But with the Optical Image Stabilizer function, the problem is solved in no time.

Coming to the optical performance, the lens offers a 6X optical zoom with a 35-210 mm focal length equivalent to 35 mm. The chromic observation is corrected by the SR coating whereas the double sided lens with a spherical surface prevents lens distortion. The 3.0 inch LCD screen gives around 230,000 pixels which is a very large count i.e., aided by the safety zoom option which avoids interpolation. The optical zoom can be increased to 15X with the resolution of a satisfactory level to give a 10×15 post card size prints, which are easily obtained by any Picture Bridge printer without requiring any PC. And don’t worry about the memory/space as the camera has a built-in memory card of 32MB and supports SD, SDHC and MMC cards in addition to MMC PLUS and HC MMC Plus formats which has a capacity of up to 32GB. Wow! Now you can shoot a whole wedding or a surprise birthday without any stop.

If you are considering to buy a digital camera then you should seriously consider this great camera. The price of this master piece is a bargain deal around £300 which is quite affordable keeping in view the functions it performs. In addition to the suitable price, one can’t refrain from admitting the comfortable features it offers in holding and taking great photos. Almost identical to the G7, Canon Power shot G9 has an anti reflective textured coating that protects the camera from sun, rain and tough climatic conditions as well as physical harm. The lens has a black alumite ring that not only acts as protective but also adds to the classy look. The camera is no doubt heavy, but a nice thumb rest ensures that you don’t get tired of holding the camera. All in all, Canon Power shot G9 is a wonder to have…so go own it now!
